Atlético Madrid has won the race for top Belgian talent Arthur Vermeeren. The 18-year-old midfielder is leaving his training club Royal Antwerp for the Spanish capital, where he signed a contract until 2030. Given his market value of 30 million euros, the two-time national player is one of the biggest transfers of this winter.

The newspaper “Het NieuwsbladTransfer expert puts the transfer fee at 25 million euros Fabrizio Romano speaks of a base sum of 22 million euros plus bonuses. There is also talk of a resale share for Antwerp. Either way, Atlético only spent more money once in the winter: in 2018, Diego Costa came from Chelsea for 60 million euros. Vermeeren, meanwhile, is leaving Belgium as one of the country’s most expensive exports. He is the 13th player to be moved away for a transfer fee of at least 20 million euros.
The right-footer was promoted to Antwerp’s professional squad in 2022 and has had a steep development since then. This season alone his market value increased by 13 million euros. “Vermeeren is the outstanding talent in the Belgian league,” said Bart Tamsyn, Area Manager Belgium at Transfermarkt. “Despite being only 18 years old, he shows consistent performances at a high level, is attracting interest from numerous top clubs from abroad and has now also completed his first senior international matches.”
Vermeeren played 66 games for Antwerp and contributed three goals and eight assists. He was also traded by Premier League giants such as Liverpool FC, Arsenal FC, Manchester City, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur.
