At the Jamaican athletics championships, Kishane Thompson not only achieved the World Cup qualification. His 100-meter run boomed through the sprint scene with Donnerhall.
Kishane Thompson refers to himself as “Boring type”. The 100-meter runner was also shown in the “Netflix” documentary “Sprint” from his reserved side, he made it clear in his short statements that at least he does not speak publicly but acts. Thompson withdraws, there is not much that you know about him. He keeps a lot to himself, but if he does what he can best, the tartan track trembles.
Jamaican Championships Become a Thompson show
Before the upcoming World Cup in Tokyo (13th to 21st September), Thompson now had the task of asserting himself against his strong national competition. The national championships – or trials – are not just about the title, but above all about taking one of the first three places. Because this is the only way to Jamaican to the World Cup. Thompson managed that. Thompson became champions. But: Thompson mainly wrote history and amazed his colleagues.
The previous day, the 23-year-old had once again demonstrated that speeches don’t necessarily seem to be his passion. His post on “Instagram” looked like a mandatory task, it was a photo of itself, upright with a rather tortured smile-but with a two-word message that spoke plain text: “Ready? Ready !!!!” And how ready Thompson was.
In the night of Saturday (German time), his feet in Kingston shook a time of 9.75 seconds on the train. He is now the six -fastest man of all time, since May 2015 no athlete has been so brisk over 100 meters. Nevertheless, Thompson said afterwards: “To be honest, I can do it much better.” In front of the eyes of world records Usain Bolt (9.58 seconds) he had also ran faster than athletics superstar Noah Lyles (best time 9.79 seconds) ever ran.
| Place | Athlete (home country) | Time (date) |
|---|---|---|
1 | Usain Bolt (Jamaica) | 9.58 (08/16/2009) |
2 | Tyson Gay (USA) | 9.69 (September 20, 2009) |
2 | Yohan Blake (Jamaica) | 9.69 (23.08.2012) |
4 | Asafa Powell (Jamaica) | 9.72 (02.09.2008) |
5 | Justin Gatlin (USA) | 9.74 (May 15th, 2015) |
| 6 | Kishane Thompson (Jamaica) | 9.75 (27.06.2025) |
… 12 | Noah Lyles (USA) | 9.79 (04.08.2024) |
Thompson was missing five thousandths of Olympic gold
Lyles is the complete opposite of Thompson. He is the entertainer, the striking, but also the Olympic champion. The two athletes had to wait a long time in Paris a year ago before they knew who of them won the race for gold. Lyles later admitted that he thought Thompson won. Thompson himself also looked confident in the first moments – but then Lyles cheered because he had finished 0.005 seconds earlier.
“I didn’t trust myself and my speed to get through the finish line. I’m disappointed”said Thompson afterwards. But he was too “thankful” After all, it is the case with many athletes, especially individual athletes that they have to suffer a setback before they celebrate the big triumph. And Thompson is on the best – and fastest – way to be able to reach this year.

Is Lyles really still the “fastest man in the world”?
In his profile description on “Instagram”, his opponent of Lyles still has: “Worlds you fast”. But he will have to prove right now that this title may not be outdated and he is still “The fastest man in the world” is. This season, Lyles has not yet contested an official 100-meter race, he only ran the sprint relay in Gainesville (USA) in April and over 400 meters-so it was more of a training session with a competitive character.
At the moment, Lyles is not at all duty to prove this evidence. As a reigning world champion, he is automatically qualified for Tokyo and does not have to cope with the trial examination in the USA (July 31st to August 3rd), unlike Thompson in Jamaica. Lyles currently has his appearances more in high -gloss productions and less on the red track. But on this he will present himself soon, on July 19, the American will appear again as athlete at the Diamond League meeting in London.
Nothing is known about whether Thompson will start against him. After his 9.75-second combat announcement before, the Jamaican wants to show again on American reason that he wants to be the one who drives home with World Cup gold this year. On July 5, Thompson starts at the Diamond League meeting in Eugene-for the first time as the sixth fastest man in athletics history and the fastest person in ten years.
