Nursing home residents who cannot go to the TT do not have to fear that they will miss out on all the motorcycle fun. On June 21, at least a hundred motorcycles will leave for a tour of various nursing homes in Assen.
Teun Kijf, councilor for the PVV in Assen, came up with the idea of organizing the tour after questions about similar initiatives were asked in the municipal council. On his own initiative, Kijf called several nursing homes and asked what they thought of such an on-site tour.
“I called about five nursing homes. They said: we would really like it if you came by.” The TT organization was also enthusiastic, says Kijf. “But they thought it was still a bit too early. Because of the crowds and safety reasons, they said: ‘We’re not doing that now’.”
Kijf decided to simply implement his plan himself. “During the TT we do something for the youth, the older youth, the over-50s. But there is nothing for people who can no longer leave home. What could be better than visiting the nursing homes the day after the TT City Run?”
And so Kijf rounded up dozens of motorcyclists, from inside and outside Drenthe. “Between a hundred and two hundred motorcycles are on the road. We start on Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Expo Hall.”
The riders will then visit at least five Asser nursing homes. “We start at Vijverhof, Anholt, Arendstate, Ceresstaete, Slingeborgh and Nieuw Graswijk. We are about fifteen minutes from each nursing home.”
This year the tour will only focus on Assen, Kijf explains. “But if it catches on, we would like to look at expanding it next year.”
