In the US state of Texas, at least 24 people were killed by floods due to heavy rainfall, local authorities report on Friday.
There are also 23 girls missing who were on a Christian summer camp along the Guadalupe River. The water level in that river rose within 45 minutes by eight meters in the night from Thursday to Friday.
“There are still several people missing at the moment, but we are looking hard and we will continue with that,” said Seriff Larry. L. Leitha van Kerr County Friday at a press conference. “That is probably going to be a matter of being days.”
Vicegouverneur Dan Patrick van Texas said at the same press conference that a total of about five hundred people are looking for and that fourteen helicopters and twelve drones have also been used. He promised the families of the missing girls “that they do everything that is humanly possible to find your daughter.”
Warning in advance
The National Weather Service had already warned about possible floods on Thursday afternoon, but according to the local authorities, everything went so unexpectedly that it could not be anticipated.
US President Donald Trump calls the floods “terrible” and promises to send federal help to Texas.
More rain is expected in the area for the next 48 hours and with that there is a risk of new floods.
