At least 12 killed in violent clashes between protesters and security forces in Peru | Abroad

The disturbances took place at the airport of Juliaca, in the south of the South American country. On Saturday, people were injured in the same place after protesters tried to storm the airport.

Peru has been unsettled since former president Pedro Castillo was impeached. He is serving an 18-month prison sentence for sedition. The demonstrators demand that his successor Dina Boluarte resign and that ex-president Castillo be released from prison. They also want new elections.

The events on Monday bring the total death toll since the unrest in early December to 34. The exact cause of death of the nine demonstrators has not been released. “We ask that force by law enforcement be lawful, necessary and proportionate and we urge the prosecution to investigate quickly to clarify the facts,” the ombudsman of the South American country wrote on Twitter.
