In the Netherlands, bobsledding is a tiny sport. Our country has only 20 bobsledders. The bobsleigh association is therefore the smallest sports association in the Netherlands. We regularly travel to Winterberg, Germany, for training.
In the summer, so-called push training takes place there and in the winter the bobsledders can make descents with the bobsleigh. “It is simply a sport that takes place in the mountains and in the winter,” says Wesselink.
Switching from athletics
Wesselink and Koster have both switched from athletics to bobsleigh. Wesselink was a hurdler until four years ago. In daily life he also works as a lawyer.
The bobsledders’ goal is to reach the Olympic Games. To achieve this, the starting speed had to be increased, so Wesselink asked if good friend Koster could help with this. “With his two meters and 105 kilos, he is perfect for bobsleigh,” says national coach De Bruin.
Koster was persuaded by Wesselink to strengthen the team. “I was looking for the last impetus the team needed. We are now on the starting top-5, top-6 in the world.”
