From next year it will be easier for Assen residents to divide their home, rent out rooms or place a temporary home on the property. In this way, Assen wants to create more affordable living spaces. According to the municipality, at least 1,500 homes are eligible.
“We see that a lot of households now live with fewer people in a house or want to live smaller. That is actually a shame,” says councilor Cor Staal (Christian Union). “At the same time, there are many people looking for a home. We would like to cooperate with this. We want to encourage people who want to split their home.”
According to the councilor, the municipality is already receiving many questions about the possibilities for house division. But there are still strict rules for this. These will be relaxed from next year.
This does not mean that everyone will soon be able to divide their home. Conditions remain attached. Staal: “We have to see whether it fits, whether the house is suitable for it. We also look at whether the neighborhood can bear the extra crowds. And of course we don’t want very small cubicles in houses. With the rules we have now drawn up, it immediately becomes clear whether it is allowed.”
In addition, new construction remains desperately needed for enough homes. Assen has plans for 10,000 new homes. This is being built in Kloosterveen and in the center.
