Assen is investing €3.500 in research into a new location for Theo Thijssen School

The municipality of Assen is investing 350,000 euros in a housing study into the best location for the Theo Thijssen School. The school building on Sluisstraat needs to be replaced. There are two scenarios for public school. Or new construction will be built on the current site. Or they move to a school building opposite, which is the municipality’s preference.

This concerns the NHL Stenden teacher training college building on Zeemanstraat. The northern university of applied sciences will permanently stop teacher training in Assen next September, which was already reduced from full-time to part-time training five years ago. The building was purchased by the municipality of Assen in the middle of last year.

After a renovation, the Theo Thijssen school at that location could ‘go for another forty years’, the municipality says. It will then become an integrated childcare centre, including childcare. The administrative office of the public education organization Plateau will also be located there, which also includes the Theo Thijssen School.

If relocation to the building on Zeemanstraat proves feasible, the old school will be demolished. Houses will be built there. The feasibility study is scheduled to be completed before April 1. Almost 4.4 million euros has been reserved for the replacement housing of the Theo Thijssen School.

But it may still take some time before the time comes for the Theo Thijssen School to receive replacement housing. The Pabo building must first serve temporarily as a replacement educational location for the Emma school in the center. This public primary school is awaiting a renovation and expansion of 10 million euros. But a group of local residents is against the construction plans and is threatening legal proceedings.

Local residents would prefer to see the Emma School permanently moved from their residential area to the Pabo building. According to them, the building is large enough for both Asser primary schools.
