Assen gets its own monopoly game: ‘The Koopmansplein is the Kalverstraat’

Soon everyone will be able to play a real estate magnate in Assen. An edition of Monopoly will be released this summer that focuses purely on Assen. The Weierstraat, Rolderstraat and the Marsdijk shopping center; they are all on the game board.

The game is an idea of Marcel Ellerie and Pim Albronta, both from service club Kiwanis. “We collect money there for sick and poor children who need it in and around Assen. That’s how we came up with the idea to market a monopoly game of Assen,” explains Ellerie.

Entrepreneurs could buy in for the game. “We have been selective in that,” says Ellerie. “We were looking for companies that fit in the street in question.” De Bonte Wever is depicted on the street Stadsbroek, the Drents Museum at the Kloosterstraat and the Scapino at the Oudestraat. “You really go in all directions.”

All in all, 5,500 euros were raised. That money is donated to the Kiwanis Children’s Fund. “We are looking for great projects where this money can go. We are open to tips,” says Ellerie.

The sign is all about Assen, in which RTV Drenthe also plays a major role. “The chance cards are dedicated to RTV Drenthe.” And those chance cards also have a link with Assen. “We have also tried to give it a twist. For example, it is about the radio budget, or about the legacy of a notary who participates.”

The Asser variant for the Kalverstraat, the most expensive street in the original Monopoly game, is the Koopmansplein, with Vanderveen as the signboard. “That is the ultimate picture of Assen.” Two thousand editions have been made of the game. “Sales are going very fast. If we are successful, we can always scale up.”
