Asia D’Amato, season over: where to work, recovery times

The Italian gymnast broke the anterior cruciate ligament in her left knee and suffered a minor meniscus injury last week in Cairo

Asia D’Amato is unlucky. The “Fairy” of artistic, second on vault in the World Cup in Cairo last week, will unfortunately have to end up under the knife again. The imperfect arrival during Saturday’s exercise caused, in fact, the rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament of the left knee and a small infringement of a meniscus. The blue will have to have surgery on May 18th and unfortunately it’s the end of the season.

The intervention

The injured knee of the European leading gymnast of the All Around 2022 will be the subject of other evaluations in the coming days by Dr. Jurgen Barthofer, a distinguished doctor from the Austrian orthopedic clinic in Linz. Barthofer is the same orthopedic surgeon who operated on a very young Alice D’Amato on her right knee on 28 August 2015, for the same injury as her twin. “Considering the longer recovery times than in other disciplines due to the stress to which the operated knee is subjected, we will only see Asia again in 2024 – analyzes coach Enrico Casella -. “Our goal is to win the Olympic team pass at the next World Cup, then in the Olympic year we’ll see who will be better off to represent Italy in Paris. Among the possible athletes, there is also Vanessa Ferrari”.

Greetings from Asia

“I thank all those who have been close to me and who continue to do so – says Asia – It’s certainly not an easy time, but unfortunately, and it’s not nice to say, I’m used to it. I will get up again this time because this is my life. Train, compete, win and get hurt. Rejoice and cry. Maybe on the same day, during the same training or the same race. I will miss the World Championships this autumn (scheduled in Antwerp from 30 September to 8 October, ed), but I will be ready for the important appointments of next season which will culminate with the Olympic Games in Paris. My thanks in this difficult moment go to my coaches, physiotherapists, my family, the Fiamme Oro, the Italian Gymnastics Federation and in particular to Professor Guido Zattoni, who was the first to visit me”.
