Former Hanover professional Sébastien Pocognoli will be the new coach of AS Monaco. The 38-year-old Belgian is leaving Union Saint-Gilloise after just over a season and signed a contract with the Monegasques until June 2027. Pocognoli succeeds Adi Hütter in the principality. Edin Terzic was also discussed as a candidate.
Pocognoli had been on the sidelines at Union Saint-Gilloise since the 2024/25 season and averaged 1.91 points in 69 games. He also sensationally won the club’s first championship in 90 years. Monaco is only his second coaching position in the men’s division. He was still active as a player until summer 2021.
Predecessor Hütter was relieved of his position last Friday. The 55-year-old finished last season with the Monegasques in third place and thus secured qualification for the premier class. After seven match days in Ligue 1 we currently have fifth place and four wins. In the Champions League, the club is waiting for the first three points after two games.
When looking for a successor, AS Monaco held talks with ex-BVB coach Terzic, but these failed. In addition to the 42-year-old, Marco Rose, Thiago Motta (both without a club) and Sérgio Conceição (now at Al-Ittihad) were also considered candidates.
