Artist of the Eindhoven yellow cones Claes Oldenburg passed away

Pop art artist Claes Oldenburg, known for the gigantic yellow cones in Eindhoven, has died at the age of 93. The artwork called ‘the Flying Pins’ at the head of the John F. Kennedylaan is typical of his style.

The Swedish-born sculptor died Monday at his Manhattan home. He is known for his colossal sculptures in public spaces of everyday objects, such as a baseball bat, scissors, a squeezed tube of toothpaste or bowling pins.

The designer devised the design in Eindhoven together with his wife. Oldenburg’s second wife was the Dutch-born sculptor Coosje van Bruggen, who worked with him from 1976 until her death in 2009.

The Flying Pins work was unveiled on May 31, 2000. It is at a busy point in Eindhoven, which according to the designer fits well with the ‘dynamics of the sinking bowling ball with the flying and sinking pins’.
