Nothing to César Manrique (1919 – 1992) is conventional. Architecture, painting or sculpture – but surprisingly, his most important creation is not a single work of art or building. It is his Canarian home island of Lanzarote, which he made into something unique through the combination of art, nature, nature and the nature of people. Manrique regarded Lanzarote as a total work of art that is in constant interaction with its surroundings. He left an island on which art and nature not only coexist, but also fertilize each other – a place, shaped by his creative curiosity and his respectful way of dealing with nature.
