“Very disappointed” by the World Cup
For VfL captain Maximilian Arnold, the fact that there are no VfL Wolfsburg players in the squad for the World Cup in Qatar, despite the recent strong performances and nine competitive games in a row without defeat, also has something to do with the Wolfsburg location.
“Perhaps it is in fact due to the lack of a lobby. Maybe VfL Wolfsburg is not the right club when it comes to playing in the national team,” said the 28-year-old midfielder in an interview with the “Wolfsburger Allgemeine Zeitung”. “Maybe other clubs are more in focus.”

Arnold had not been nominated by national coach Hansi Flick for the World Cup starting on Sunday and had been “very, very disappointed” about it. It is clear that Bayern Munich players would be more in focus. “But I don’t think I have to hide because I’ve also played in the Champions League and Europa League.”
VfL Wolfsburg: Baku and Nmecha are also absent from the World Cup in Qatar
In addition to Arnold, Ridle Baku (24) from Wolfsburg also missed the leap into the World Championship squad. VfL striker Lukas Nmecha (23) had to pass injured as a promising candidate. Arnold has played three games for the DFB selection so far – his last on November 14, 2021 (4-1 in Armenia). In the Nation League duels against Hungary (0: 1) and England (3: 3) on September 23 and 26, 2022, he was at least in the squad.
