The Public Prosecution Service has demanded fourteen years in prison against 24-year-old Jordy C. for the fatal shooting in a supermarket in Vlissingen. The shooting took place on June 22 last year. 44-year-old Thomas van Wanrooij was killed.

According to the public prosecutor, there is no question of murder, because there is no pre-conceived plan for the fatal encounter. The Public Prosecution Service does consider manslaughter proven. The defense of Jordy C., who stated that he shot out of pure panic and self-defense, was firmly dismissed.

Camera images from and around the Vlissingen supermarket played a crucial role in the courtroom. According to the justice department, it clearly shows that C. was not attacked outside, but almost immediately pulled out his converted gas pistol and fired deliberately when the victim came after him. “It was not self-defense out of necessity, but a targeted attack,” said the prosecutor.

Argument that got out of hand

The fatal shooting on June 22 last year followed an argument in the supermarket that got out of hand. Earlier in the morning, the court viewed images of a fight inside the Jumbo between C.’s pregnant girlfriend and another woman.

When Van Wanrooij and his son then stormed into the store, C. was knocked to the ground and onto a bread bin. He was grabbed by the throat, but the situation only really ended in tragedy when the parties left the store and fatal shots were fired outside.

The victim’s partner addressed the court on behalf of their young son: “He does not understand what murdered means. But that day will come. My son has a life sentence.”
