“Someone call 999, Richard Hawley’s been robbed!” We would like to think of Alex Turner’s lead for the Mercury Music Prize-winning 2006 prize to the Britse frontman and then a piano went to the Marconi studio of the VRT. Yesterday the band Arctic Monkeys won the prestigieuze muziekprijs for their debut performance Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not. Turner sings no longer than a louche hotel bar pianist maar oprechter, met meer geloof in het own kunnen. The title song tackled him with two dramatic arm gestures, bathing in gigantic podium light. In ‘One Point Perspective’ overacted the text rule “I’ve played to quiet rooms like this before / Bear with me, man, I lost my train of thought”, fronsend, het noorden kwijt, en dat was geinig.
Meisjesgekrijs
How do you like the ironic ‘Four Out Of Five’? As a 36-year-old charlatan? Turner is everything to keep a likkebarende womanizer. In het verleden he said no sarcasm uit over the excesses of rock-‘n-roll. Het typetje dat hij speelde ten tijde van het waanzinnig successful album AT THE – gel in de haren, een leren jekker, een kammetje bij de hand – onderstreepte the sardonic kijk alleen maar. “Well, we could have a real conversation in this scenario”, zo luidde maandagavond een hilarische, gortdroge bindtekst, temidden van meisjesgekrijs, “but let’s not”. Turners nieuwe vlam, de Franse ngeres Louise Verneuil, kicks wellicht op dat soort droogkomische cool?
De toute façon, we listened to the Schuimbekken rock material that never came out with the new song. Het log grooving ‘Do I Wanna Know’ which was minimalistic enough. Also ‘RU Mine’ speelde slim met de ruimte tussen twee akkoorden and vulde die niet zelden met a lekker gritty guitar. ‘Snap Out Of It’ deed retro genoeg aan om in sync te blijven met de liedjes uit the car. Alleen doorbraaksingle ‘I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor’ sloeg as een tang op een varken. Bon, de Monkeys speelden he weliswaar een vurige, kekke versie van der openspatten than een lavabel. No harm done.
Puff and blaze
“Stukken beter dan hun concert op Lowlands”, hoorden we een meisje zeggen nadat een vonkend ‘505’ de boel had dichtschroeid. En “tien keer better dan op Pukkelpop”. Before that, the monkeys say they are close to their midlife crisis. Zelf sta ik te puffen ent te blazen na zo’n song. Misschien omdat ik in de beginninggen my gitaar hoog om my nek droeg wardoor ik superstrak speelde. Tegenwoordig depends on the laag. Soms I may ze zelfs aan de kant zetten. Do you want to relax? A piece of art is waiting for you. Vraag maar aan Richard Hawley.
