Ex-Apple chief designer & OpenAI CEO talk about AI hardware

As the Reuters news agency reports, former Apple design chief Jony Ive and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman are said to have discussed building a new hardware device with AI. Reuters refers to a report by The Information, which cites information from two people familiar with the matter. What exactly this device is supposed to be or whether they actually decide to build it is currently unknown. However, Ive and Altman discussed what new hardware for the AI age could look like. However, apart from the duo, Softbank CEO Masayoshi Son is also said to have been part of some aspects of the conversation. OpenAI and Softbank did not respond to a query from Reuters. And Ive could not be reached for comment either.

Not the first collaboration with Apple designers

However, if the duo actually does collaborate on AI hardware in the future, it wouldn’t be Altman’s first partnership with a former Apple employee, as The Verge reports. In the past, former Apple designer Thomas Meyerhoffer helped design the spherical, retina-scanning sphere for Altman’s Worldcoin crypto project. Orb, as the sphere is called, was developed by Tools for Humanity, a company Altman co-founded in 2019.

Altman is also one of the largest investors in Humane, a hardware and software startup co-founded by former Apple employees that is working on developing a wearable AI device that will replace smartphones in the future. In cooperation with OpenAI, Humane is working to integrate the AI company’s technology into the device.
