There is probably tension between Apple and OpenAI. Apparently the AI company is even considering legal action over the collaboration around ChatGPT and Siri.
• Partnership between OpenAI and Apple increasingly strained
• According to press reports, the ChatGPT developer is now considering legal action against Apple
• The point of contention is the lack of benefits from integrating ChatGPT into Apple’s ecosystem
The collaboration between Apple and OpenAI seems to have deteriorated significantly. As the Reuters news agency reports, citing a person familiar with the matter, OpenAI has not yet seen the expected benefits from the cooperation with the iPhone manufacturer.
According to the report, OpenAI’s lawyers are now working with an external law firm on various legal options. This includes, among other things, the possibility of accusing Apple of a breach of contract without immediately filing a lawsuit. Against this background, Apple shares listed on the NASDAQ temporarily lost 1.14 percent to $294.80 in the premarket.
Expectations for ChatGPT integration apparently not met
The partnership between the two companies was presented in 2024. At that time, Apple integrated its “Apple Intelligence” functions into applications such as Siri and at the same time integrated the chatbot ChatGPT into its devices. Users have since been able to access ChatGPT results directly via Siri. It is also possible to subscribe to ChatGPT via the iOS-Complete settings menu.
According to Reuters, OpenAI had hoped that the cooperation would lead to both more ChatGPT subscriptions and deeper integration into Apple’s applications. However, these expectations have not been fulfilled and attempts to renegotiate the agreement have stalled.
Apple is opening up to other AI providers
According to Reuters, additional tensions appear to arise from Apple’s broader AI strategy. Since Apple wants to allow users to choose between different third-party AI models in the future, OpenAI could lose its previous special role within Apple software.
Apple is currently testing integrations with both Claude from Anthropic and Gemini from Google. At the same time, Reuters, citing the informed source, emphasizes that OpenAI’s possible legal action is not directly related to Apple’s collaboration with other AI providers. The partnership between Apple and OpenAI was not intended to be exclusive from the start.
What this means for investors
For investors, this brings a new uncertainty factor surrounding Apple’s AI strategy into focus. The development shows that collaborations in the AI sector can quickly come under pressure despite high expectations.
Private investors should particularly monitor how Apple structures its AI partnerships in the future and what role external providers such as OpenAI, Anthropic or Google will play in this. The decisive factor will likely be whether Apple can successfully expand its AI offerings without the current tensions weighing on its product strategy or investor confidence.
