Apple partner Foxconn wants to build more than just iPhones: Tesla vehicles in its sights

• Foxconn is already the largest contract manufacturer of consumer electronics
• Five electric car models in the pipeline
• Ambitious plans as a contract manufacturer in the EV segment

Foxconn is already the world’s largest contract manufacturer for consumer electronics, and now the company wants to enter the electric car market on a large scale. The Taiwanese are not only bringing five electric vehicles onto the market, they also want to build vehicles from well-known brands such as Tesla.

Foxconn presents electric cars

Foxconn wants to come up with its own electric carrange of models to appeal to different groups of buyers.

The Model C, an SUV, is scheduled to hit Taiwan’s roads in the second half of 2023. The Model C is equipped with a 460 hp motor, with a range of up to 700 kilometers with a fully charged battery.

For the Model E, which is designed as an electric sedan, Foxconn even states a range of 750 kilometers, and buyers also get a vehicle equipped with 760 hp, which is particularly aimed at well-heeled prospective buyers.

The Model T, meanwhile, is an electrically powered city bus that was developed especially for urban transport companies. The T in the name is said to stand for “transport”. Foxconn last specified a range of 400 kilometers for the vehicle.

While the Model C, E and T were already presented to the public last year, Foxconn added two new vehicles to this year’s Tech Day: the Model B and the Model V.

The former is a compact model and planned as an entry-level vehicle, Foxconn describes the Model B as “mainstream for the younger generation”. The vehicle is to be built on the Model C platform. The Taiwanese company specifies the range as 450 kilometers, and the market launch is scheduled for 2024.

With the Model V, on the other hand, Foxconn wants to play in the pick-up market. It is “the first electric pickup truck designed and developed in Taiwan,” the company said in a press release, and Foxconn says it has a range of 420 kilometers.

Foxconn also wants to act as a contract manufacturer

The vehicles are to be built by the subsidiary Foxtron, which was founded in 2020 and is a joint venture with the Yulon Motor Group. In addition to the five vehicles of its own that Foxconn wants to bring to market with the joint venture, the company also has much more ambitious plans for the electric car market.

“So in terms of our ambitions, we can hopefully achieve the same successes as in the ICT (information and communications technology) industry, but we will start small, namely at around 5% in 2025,” Reuters quoted Chairman Liu Young- way at the annual Tech Day. “I hope that one day we can build Tesla cars,” added the company manager.

Foxconn has already taken the first steps towards becoming an e-car contract manufacturer. There are joint ventures with Opel parent company Stellantis and with Geely, and there is already a collaboration with Fisker.
