Apple feature: The back of the iPhone is a secret button with a function

Of course, adding a completely new button via a system update is not that easy. After all, Apple developers can’t remotely add an extra button to the iPhone. Nevertheless, those responsible included a new button function called “Back Tap” without making any changes to the hardware iOS 14 a. As the name suggests, the feature has something to do with the back of the iPhone, which starts an application when you touch it. But how is that possible? As the website “Apfelpage” explains, the newly created touch sensitivity on the back of the iPhone works “among other things with the smartphone’s acceleration sensor”. With the update, the back of the case is transformed into a large button that can be assigned with available functions.

Enable back tap

In order for Back Tap to be used, it must first be activated in the settings. However, this option is only available to devices from the iPhone 8 that already have the latest iOS version. So if you have a corresponding smartphone with the latest system update, go to the “Accessibility” area in the settings and then click on “Tap” (Touch). Now you can select “Back Tap” and turn on the new button. In order for this to have a function, you have to equip it with an application. You can choose between double- or triple-clicking on the back, whereby both actions can also be assigned a function at the same time. For example, if you’re concerned that an accidental, double-tap on the back too often could be misinterpreted as a back tap by the iPhone, it’s a good idea to use triple-click for a command. If, on the other hand, you want to control two quick functions via the back tap, it is also possible to provide both options with the desired quick access. However, iPhone owners with protective cases do not have to worry about functionality problems. As Focus Online reports, the iPhone also recognizes touches through a shell.

Assignment with numerous functions possible

There are almost no limits to the assignment of the back tap with functions. For example, by double-clicking on the back, the iPhone can take a screenshot, open the control center, call up apps, activate Siri or mute itself. According to “The Verge”, it is even extremely surprising that there are no limitations to Apple applications. For example, apps from other developers can be quickly opened and run at will with Back Tap. This new level of control is rather untypical for iOS devices. “Imagine Apple letting you remap the side button (for Siri and Apple Pay) on an iPhone 12, for example to launch Google Assistant or send a preset text message to your partner. It’s practically unthinkable,” The Verge continues further in his article. Back Tap is therefore very special from several points of view. Not only was the additional button only newly introduced in the course of a system update, it can also be freely assigned with a number of functions that do not have to have anything to do with Apple.
