Manchester United coach Rúben Amorim had to leave on Monday. As a successor, the top club is probably thinking of a man who was once on the list at FC Bayern.

The news shook the Premier League on Monday: Manchester United is parting ways with coach Rúben Amorim. After just over a year, the Portuguese has to leave the “Red Devils” again. 6th place in the league after 20 match days and recent open criticism of the club’s management were too much for the management of the former top club. For now, ex-player Darren Fletcher will take over the sidelines on an interim basis. But one name is already being considered as the top favorite to succeed Amorim. It’s an old friend from the Bundesliga.

Because both the “Independent” and the “Telegraph” reported shortly after the Amorim exit: Oliver Glasner is said to be very popular with United management. Glasner worked in the Bundesliga for four years from 2019, first coaching VfL Wolfsburg, then taking over Eintracht Frankfurt in 2021 – and leading the SGE to a historic Europa League victory in 2022. The Austrian has been training Crystal Palace in the Premier League since February 2024 – and his work there is said to have impressed the United makers.

Because Glasner took over the Londoners in 15th place and, thanks to an impressive run with 24 points from 13 games, led the team to 10th place by the end of the season. FC Bayern is said to have been interested after the end of the 2024 season; the Munich team was looking for a successor to Thomas Tuchel at the time, but then decided on Vincent Kompany.

It was only last year that Glasner celebrated the greatest success in the club’s history with Palace: In May 2025, Palace won the FA Cup with a 1-0 win in the final against Manchester City – the first major title for Palace ever.

Important: Glasner’s current contract with the club ends next summer; according to reports, the 51-year-old will not sign a new contract with Crystal Palace – and could then take over United. The club assumes that Glasner will fulfill his contract and will actually only be available in the summer.
