Three and a half years ago, Niklas Süle came to Dortmund with great promise. But the ex-DFB professional rarely knew how to convince BVB. The misunderstanding should end in the summer.

Niklas Süle’s days at Borussia Dortmund are apparently numbered. As “Bild” reports, it has already been decided internally at BVB that the contract of the former German national player (49 international matches) will not be extended. Süle’s working paper with the third-place team in the Bundesliga expires next summer. According to the report, BVB is already looking intensively for a new player for the defense center.

Süle moved from FC Bayern to Dortmund in the summer of 2022. The expectations of the 1.95 meter tall central defender were high. He was almost never able to fulfill them. Injuries set Süle back one time or another. However, there were always discussions primarily about his fitness level. Süle’s weight was repeatedly discussed in public.

Süle is hardly ever used in Dortmund these days. There are just four appearances this season. The last time the 30-year-old was on the pitch was last weekend in the 1-1 draw in Freiburg – for a minute. He can’t get past Nico Schlotterbeck, Aaron Anselmino, Emre Can, Waldemar Anton and Ramy Bensebaini.

After all: Süle will probably be allowed to play again from the start in the last game of the year against Gladbach. Anton and Anselmino are out due to injuries, Bensebaini traveled to the Africa Cup of Nations. Süle will most likely play in the back three alongside Schlotterbeck and Can.

However, the former Hoffenheim player is unlikely to have many more appearances at BVB. According to “Bild”, Süle currently earns 14 million euros a year in Dortmund. Money that the club can and will invest differently from next summer.
