Apollon Limassol separates from master trainer Alexander Zorniger

After Aus in CL qualification

Apollon Limassol parted ways with coach Alexander Zorniger one day after losing in the third round of the Champions League qualifier against Maccabi Haifa (0:4, 2:0). The 54-year-old, whose contract originally ran until 2023, took over the Cyprus club for the 2021/22 season and led them to their fourth championship. In 39 games under Zorniger, Apollon scored an average of 1.74 points. In addition to the head coach, assistants Adam Adamos and Jurek Rohrberg are also leaving Limassol.

According to the Cypriot media, the 4-0 loss in the first leg against Maccabi Haifa is not the only reason for the split. Rather, the relationships between Zorniger and some players, as well as members of the coaching team and the club management, are said to have developed deep cracks, among other things due to repeated critical and derogatory statements by the German. The top candidate for the successor is the Spaniard David Catalá, who last worked at AEK Larnaka.
