Anouk Hoogendijk feared another miscarriage: ‘This can’t be good, I thought, when I saw the blood’ | show

Anouk Hoogendijk denied her current pregnancy for fear that it would end badly. After two miscarriages, this was almost the case, the former football star tells Parents of Nu.

The 37-year-old Anouk announced in June of this year that she was pregnant again. Together with Pieter she already had son Sonny. A year earlier, she had two miscarriages, at 9 and 15 weeks. Both times she didn’t see it coming. ,,I felt great and the ultrasounds were good. That it went wrong hit us raw. Then you know: this is very vulnerable,” she tells the monthly magazine.

This time it seemed to be going well until she discovered during TV recordings that her leg was covered in blood. “This can’t be good, it’s over, I thought. But the emergency ultrasound showed that the baby was fine, presumably a blood vessel had burst. In a short time we shot from overjoyed to panic and back to reassurance. A rollercoaster, physically and mentally.”

Bleeding in uterus

A few weeks later, the shock struck again after Anouk started bleeding in her uterus. ,,They said: Congratulations, but keep in mind that things can still go wrong. I had an ultrasound every week, was in the hospital or with the midwife, every time between hope and fear. Could we be happy, or would we be better off pretending nothing happened? We chose the latter. I worked hard to protect myself, but okay, so I took less rest, while I was really pregnant.”

After a holiday on Bonaire it turned out that the bleeding had stopped. ,,It was only after the third check that something carefully fell off me. We decided to make it known, especially to believe in it ourselves, so that it became more real. Enjoyment is getting better and better.” Anouk is better prepared for the birth. ,,I will be clearer and sound the alarm sooner for, for example, an epidural. Pieter and I (at Sonny’s) went deeply together. He didn’t leave my side for a second during those two days. We came out stronger.”
