The accident, which was very reminiscent of that of OHL football player Sofian Kiyine, happened just after 8 p.m. on the R4 in Wachtebeke. A Polish driver in his late twenties missed the roundabout on Kennedylaan between Arcelor Mittal and the E34. He just drove straight on, flew through the air for several tens of meters and finally crashed his car. The impact of the blow caused the airbag of his car to open, causing a lot of smoke. That smoke caused worried motorists to extinguish the hood with their fire extinguisher, although there was actually no real fire risk.
“The twenty-something was trapped in the vehicle for a while and had to be freed by the fire brigade. In the meantime, he remained conscious. He was taken to hospital with minor injuries. His vehicle had to be towed”, says Commissioner Joachim Van de Sijpe of the Puyenbroeck police zone.
