Another shocking tragedy – The driver and kart were killed in a rally in Spain

A shocking accident has occurred in the Villa de Tineo rally in Gijon, Spain, a Spanish newspaper Marca news.

Driver Julio César Castrillo and his cart Francisco Javier Alvarez have died after crashing nose first into a tree. The crash happened on a very fast stretch of road.

Castrillo’s Citroen DS3 N5 went off the road at the end of the last special stage of the day. The driver was crushed by the force of the crash.

Spectators and medical personnel tried to save the men, but Castrillo died immediately, and Álvarez also moments later.

The competition has been abandoned.

Local El Comercio according to the Spaniards Castrillo and Álvarez were beloved figures in motorsport circles. They had been participating in rally races for more than 20 years.

Castrillo was back behind the wheel after a three-year hiatus in 2021.

The accident happened just two days after World Rally Championship driver Craig Breen died in a crash during tests for the Rally Croatia.
