A podium finish didn’t work out for Anna Weidel. But the German showed a very strong performance in the pursuit.
Thanks to a decent performance in the sprint, Anna Weidel and Vanessa Voigt had the best conditions to perform in the pursuit on Sunday. A podium finish didn’t quite work out: Anna Weidel became the best German with a strong tenth place. The victory went to the Italian Lisa Vittozzi ahead of the Swede Anna Magnussen and the Norwegian Maren Kirkeeide.
Weidel said on ARD about her race: “It went quite well on the lap. I would have liked to have been further ahead, but I’m quite happy with tenth place.”
Vanessa Voigt was the first German to take to the track, shortly afterwards Anna Weidel was also allowed to go. The other German biathletes had achieved the pursuit, but because of their placement in the sprint they were allowed to learn on Sunday and had nothing to do with the top places. Frenchwoman Lou Jeanmonnot took the lead, followed by Norwegian Maren Kirkeeide.
Jeanmonnot hit all the targets and left the shooting range to cheers from the fans. Kirkeeide had to go into the penalty loop, and Weidel also met this fate. Voigt waited a long time, but got away with no mistakes in the prone position. She still lost time and finished twelfth. Weidel two places behind.
At the front, Jeanmonnot led the field ahead of the Swede Anna Magnusson and the Italian Dorothea Wierer. In the second prone stage, the Frenchwoman conceded a round. The Swede took the lead ahead of the Italian Lisa Vittozzi and Jeanmonnot. Voigt also made no mistakes the second time and finished in tenth place.
Voigt missed in the standing position and had to complete a lap for the first time. Jeanmonnot, Vittozzi and Magnusson dueled at the front. Weidel also remained flawless. She was ranked 13th, Voigt 22nd.
After the last shooting, Vittozzi took the lead, closely followed by Magnussen. Like Voigt, Jeanmonnot had to complete two penalty laps. Weidel shone and shot quickly, entering the final lap in fourth place. In the end she secured tenth place.
