At Olympics, Ann-Katrin Berger became heroine after years as a substitute goalkeeper. She also delighted in the EM quarter-finals. In private, she had to cope with two bitter setbacks, but found her great love.
The Olympic Games in Paris 2024 will never forget Ann-Katrin Berger. It was the tournament in which the long -time replacement goalkeeper was finally allowed to be number one of the German national team between the posts – and showed several times why the then national coach Horst Hrubesch had committed herself instead of Merle Frohms.
In the quarter -finals of the German eleven against Canada, Berger’s great hour beat for the first time. For 120 minutes, neither of the two teams had scored a hit, accordingly a decision had to be made in the penalty shootout. Berger parried two attempts by the Canadians. She then converted the final penalty to victory and then let her celebrate her teammates.
A similar picture shortly afterwards in the game around the bronze medal. Germany led against Spain deep into added time 1-0, but suddenly there was a penalty for the Iberians. The two -time world footballer Alexia Putellas started – and failed with her attempt to make precious metal for Germany.
Also in the European Championship quarter-finals on Saturday, Berger knew how to inspire, parried one shot from the French after the other, threw himself into every ball and finally became a new heroine in the DFB goal with two parried attempts in the penalty shootout. Not a matter of course, because the 34-year-old has a difficult history.
Berger already suffered twice in thyroid cancer. This was the first time in 2017, the second time 2022. In both cases, however, she was able to defeat the disease quickly, each returned to the pitch a short time after the diagnosis.
During this time, Berger played at club level in England. Between 2016 and 2019 she was active at Birmingham City LFC, then until 2024 at Chelsea. There she also met her partner: Jessica “Jess” Carter.
The English international and Berger have been in a relationship for years and now even engaged. This made the defender public in an Instagram post last year. In a photo she can be seen closely with Berger in front of the Statue of Liberty in New York. A engagement ring shines on your ring finger. Carter wrote: “Seven years over, forever.”
With their relationship, Berger and Carter are accordingly open. In a “world” interview, the goalkeeper said in September 2024: “It was not a discussion for us, it just happened.
In the meantime, Berger and Carter led a long -term relationship. Because: Berger left FC Chelsea in April towards the US club NJ/NY Gotham FC. In the summer, however, her Carter followed, so that both are teammates as in London.
At the European Championship in Switzerland, both can meet in the final, because both England and Germany are still in the race. While Carter and the “Lionesses” meet Italy in Geneva on Tuesday, Germany and Berger will deal with Spain a day later in Zurich. If both prevail, the direct duel in the final would be perfect.
