Angela de Jong is increasingly hinting at a career change: how will that work out? Victor Vlam thinks that SBS 6 should bring her in. “She could get 800 thousand euros there.”
It is really striking how often Angela de Jong hints that she would like something different than her successful daily column about television. She then shouts that she wants to become a kind of Ferry Mingelen, that she wants to explain politics in The Hague. As an advance, we recently saw her in the political talk show Café Kockelmann.
“Buy Angela away!”
TV critic Victor Vlam thinks this is the moment for John de Mol to strike. According to him, she would fit in well with the right-wing TV news News of the Day. “My proposal would be: buy Angela de Jong away from AD and make her the permanent media interpreter of that program,” he says in the podcast The Communicados.
He continues: “When that happens, you immediately hire someone who is seen as authoritative by the public in that area. That is a big advantage and they can also compete better with RTL Boulevard, which can partly be seen at the same time on RTL 4.”
Million viewers
RTL Boulevard attracts a million viewers. “And if you manage to attract 200,000 viewers, then News of the Day will be a huge success on SBS 6. I would say: plan a media topic every day, plan it at 6:30 p.m., so five minutes before Boulevard starts and make sure you every day you have something that is controversial and of course Angela does that very well.”
Why would Angela do that? “The very simple reason is that you no longer have the pressure of that daily column. I think that weighs heavily on Angela. I can really imagine that, because it is very difficult to watch a lot of TV every day and also have a column that is widely read and have to report something interesting every day.”
Daily pressure
Angela is already standing in front of the exit, according to Victor. “I think she is fed up and the fact that she has also speculated in the past about her own departure and that she might write a political column, that also indicates that a bit.”
He continues: “So you get rid of that daily pressure, that’s one reason to do it, and the second reason to do it is that you can earn a lot of money at Talpa. I think she can earn more there than at AD.”
Eight tons
Angela was asked to present 6 Inside (a predecessor of Nieuws van de Dag) in 2018, but declined. She was then able to earn eight thousand euros over three years.
News of the Day is a lot less risky than a show that has not yet been on the air, according to Victor. “You now have the certainty that it will not simply be stopped tomorrow. They got a year anyway.”
Not afraid
The chance that Angela will enter no time having to look for a new job is small, Victor thinks. “Yes, that means that she does not have to worry that in a few weeks she will suddenly have to sit at the desk at Shownieuws, just like Natacha Harlequin, to fulfill her contract obligations. So it’s not super risky.”
“Suppose you can earn 800 thousand at Talpa, that’s not bad at all, is it? That will be more than with the AD.”
