Andrei Roeblev beats Denis Shapovalov in blood-curdling five-setter | US Open

us openAndrei Roeblev has qualified for the fourth round of the US Open at the expense of Denis Shapovalov. The ninth placed Russian defeated the Canadian in an exciting five-setter of 4 hours and 7 minutes with 4-6 6-2 7-6 (3) 4-6 7-6 (7). A tiebreak to ten points is played in the fifth set.

Roeblev failed to serve out the game in the deciding set at 5-4 and missed three game points on his own serve, but showed resilience in the remainder. In the super tiebreak he converted his fifth game point with a forehand that was too powerful for the Canadian.

The 24-year-old Roeblev – who has never made it past the quarterfinals in a grand slam – will take on Briton Cameron Norrie in the next round, who left Denmark’s Holger Rune with 7-5 6-4 6-1.

Third-seeded Carlos Alcaraz, in turn, had few problems with American Jenson Brooksby, who was defeated 6-3 6-3 6-3.
