Amy Winehouse’s tragic death continues to shock the music industry to this day. In 2011, the then 27-year-old died of alcohol poisoning. She would have turned 40 this Thursday (September 14th). On the occasion of her birthday, her ex-husband Blake Fielder-Civil speaks about the relationship between him and the soul singer on ITV’s British morning show “Good Morning Britain”.
The couple met in a bar in 2005. Since then, the relationship has been characterized by constant ups and downs. Winehouse and Fielder-Civil had been married since 2007, but had it annulled just two years later. Both suffered from severe alcohol and drug addiction, which ultimately drove the musician to her death. Although Fielder-Civil allegedly caused her to become addicted, he does not see himself as the culprit. “I was a 20-year-old drug addict and had no idea how to get myself clean, let alone anyone else,” Winehouse’s ex explains.
The 41-year-old is also sure that it was not just disastrous drug use that led to the singer’s death. “Aside from the obvious things that everyone knew about – the addiction – it’s hard to deal with fame itself at a young age, and I think it all happened pretty quickly for Amy and I back then,” Fielder-Civil reflects. The intense pressure of being under constant surveillance contributed to Winehouse becoming lost in alcohol.
The “Rehab” artist’s ex-husband was also asked what he would change if he could go back in time again. “Almost everything,” he replies. “Before Amy and I did this together [Heroin zu nehmen]I had tried it a few times, so now I recognize in myself – and this is part of being kinder to myself – that I didn’t know what I was doing.”
Blake Fielder-Civil wanted to honor and remember the singer in the live broadcast. “I actually wanted to wish Amy a happy birthday. It’s devastating that she’s not here. I think of her often,” he mourns.
In January 2023, the biopic “Back To Black” was announced, which will depict Amy Winehouse’s life and career. Winehouse is portrayed in the film by actress Marisa Abela. Directed by Sam Taylor Johnson. A release date has not yet been announced for the film.
