Amsterdam swimmer (34) who had to be rescued from Spaarne died

The swimmer who had to be rescued this morning from the water along the Donkere Spaarne in Haarlem – after he went under and was briefly missing – has died. The police confirm that. It concerns a 34-year-old Amsterdammer, he died in hospital.

Passers-by and local residents saw the man swimming early this morning. When they suddenly didn’t see him anymore, they decided to get help. Police, ambulances and two diving teams from the fire brigade were deployed. An air ambulance also arrived.

To the hospital

The man was found after a few minutes, retrieved from the water and rushed to hospital. He died there this morning.

It is not clear exactly how the man died. The police say they do not suspect a crime. The man’s family has since been notified.
