American man declared innocent after 48 years in prison | Abroad

A 71-year-old man was declared innocent in the United States on Wednesday after serving more than 48 years in prison for a murder he did not commit. Glynn Simmons is the person who spent the longest time in prison while innocent in American history.

He was convicted in 1975, along with Don Roberts, of murdering a store employee during a robbery in Edmond, Oklahoma. He received the death penalty, which was later commuted to life in prison. His conviction was based on a single testimony, from a young customer at the store who was shot in the head during the robbery but survived.

The two men testified at the trial that they were not in Oklahoma on the day of the robbery. Simmons was released in July after 48 years, one month and 18 days in prison. Now he has also been declared innocent.

Don Roberts was released back in 2008.
