According to a senior executive of the Indian central bank, the United States found out that an Indian ship was secretly taking cargo from a Russian oil tanker on the high seas. The cargo would then have been taken to a port on the Indian west coast for further processing and shipping. In processed form, the oil would eventually have been sent to New York.
Practices
Such practices are in violation of US sanctions against Russia. Washington has instituted those sanctions to persuade Russia to end the war in Ukraine.
It is the first time authorities in India have publicly admitted US concerns about covert evasion of sanctions. The Indian government is not participating in the measures against Russia and has not condemned the Russians’ ‘special military operation’ in Ukraine.
