The American tech giant Amazon takes a 2 percent interest in Grubhub, the American branch of Just Eat Takeaway that also includes Thuisbezorgd.nl. In time, that interest can expand to 15 percent. From now on, people with an Amazon Prime subscription can order from Grubhub at no extra cost.

The deal with Amazon comes at a good time for Just Eat Takeaway, which has been upset with Grubhub’s poor performance for some time. The company, which is listed on the Amsterdam stock exchange, has been investigating a possible sale of Grubhub, which was acquired more than a year ago for an amount of 7.3 billion dollars. Other options are also being considered.

Since that takeover, about 70 percent of the market value of Just Eat Takeaway has evaporated. Several shareholders recently announced that they were extremely dissatisfied with the state of affairs at the meal delivery company. They want Just Eat Takeaway to sell the American subsidiary again.

The deal with Amazon will not affect Grubhub’s financial results, says Just Eat Takeaway. Amazon and Thuisbezorgd do not yet work together in the Netherlands, and there are no plans for that for the time being.
