The Opening of iOS for Third-Party Smartwatches
Apple’s recent update to iOS 26.5 has inadvertently enhanced the interoperability of its iPhone operating system with third-party smartwatches. This change isn’t merely a benevolent shift by the tech giant; rather, it is a legal requirement under the Digital Markets Act (DMA). This act mandates that technology from competing suppliers must be treated equally within Apple’s ecosystem, particularly in regards to notifications, file sharing, and audio functionalities. Amazfit is the first brand to capitalize on this forced opening.
Three Smartwatch Models at Launch
According to Amazfit’s official announcement, select smartwatch models can now function more effectively with Apple’s iPhones. With modifications to the Amazfit smartwatch software and the newly opened Apple ecosystem, incoming notifications can now be not only read but also responded to directly on the smartwatch. This feature, dubbed “iOS Notification Forwarding,” necessitates updates for both the watches and the Zepp app. The initial models that support this functionality include the Cheetah 2 Ultra, Balance 3, and Balance Ultra.
Future Expansions and Functionality
Amazfit plans to expand this enriched notification capability to additional models in the near future. These will include Amazfit Bip Max, Active 3 Premium, Cheetah 2 Pro, T-Rex 3, T-Rex 3 Pro, T-Rex Ultra 2, and Balance 2. This planned expansion indicates a commitment to providing seamless integration with Apple’s devices, ultimately aiming for a user-friendly experience for those who own multiple smart gadgets.
Quick Actions from Your Wrist
Amazfit asserts that users will be able to perform quick actions directly from their wrists. For instance, notifications can be dismissed or marked as read. The imagery accompanying the announcement suggests users can reply to incoming messages using custom text and emojis. The feature supports not only iMessage but also popular messaging services like WhatsApp, significantly enriching the user interaction.
Multimedia Notifications
Furthermore, some notifications can include images, such as alerts from security cameras or doorbell systems. The “iOS Notification Forwarding” allows these images to be displayed on the watch, enhancing the utility of the smartwatch in daily routines.
What Lies Ahead for Third-Party Integration
Amazfit may be the first of many brands that aim to improve communication capabilities for their products, including smartwatches and headphones, within Apple’s vast ecosystem. Given the sheer size and influence of Apple’s market presence, this opportunity aligns with a growing demand for cross-compatibility among smart devices. To leverage these new features, users will require an Apple account registered in one of the EU countries.
With looming updates and an ever-evolving landscape for device integration, the potential for a more interconnected future is promising. As competitors seize similar opportunities, the landscape of smart technology could shift beneficially for both developers and consumers alike.
