Marathon runner Amanal Petros continues his success story. In Valencia he improved the German record.
Vice world champion Amanal Petros shattered the German record at the Valencia Marathon and took a strong second place with an impressive comeback. Less than three months after his sensational silver medal at the title fights in Tokyo, he ran 2:04:03 hours in Spain.
Petros improved his compatriot Samuel Fitwi’s previous record by 53 seconds. Only Kenyan John Korir was faster in the top-class marathon in eastern Spain with a time of 2:02:25 hours. “This is a great end to the year. I am so relieved that I have achieved my goal,” said Petros on ARD.
The conditions in Valencia were ideal: Petros used this consistently, but chose a controlled pace at the beginning and stayed in the chasing pack. It was only after around 25 kilometers that the 30-year-old started his race to catch up and left a large part of the field behind him. Only Korir was faster.
