Althaus jumps in second place in the prologue in Willingen – ski jumping – winter sports

Katharina Althaus from Oberstdorf can go into the upcoming individual competitions at the home World Cup in Willingen with a lot of self-confidence. The Olympic silver medalist from Pyeongchang jumped 136 meters (109.7 points) in the prologue on Friday (January 28, 2022) and was only narrowly beaten by Yuki Ito from Japan (139.5 meters/110.6 points). Third place went to overall World Cup leader Marita Kramer from Austria (131.5/105).

Hill record by Ito

Ito had already put a big exclamation mark in the second training session. Thanks to perfect wind conditions, the Japanese jumped 154 meters – a hill record.

The other DSV athletes missed leaps into the top ten. Juliane Seyfarth (WSC Ruhla) was the second best German with 109.5 meters in 14th place. Selina Freitag (SG Nickelhütte Aue) in 20th place and Pauline Heßler (WSV Lauscha) in 23rd place landed with their jumps well under 100 meters.

Women celebrate premiere in Willingen

Since there are only 28 jumpers in total shortly before the start of the Olympic Games on the Mühlenkopfschanze, all participants were automatically qualified for the weekend competitions. The two individual competitions (in the live ticker on sportschau.de) will take place on Saturday (1 p.m.) and Sunday (10 a.m.). In addition, the German team will compete in the first mixed competition of the season on Friday from 4 p.m. The World Cup in Willingen will also be held in women’s competition for the first time.

Overall World Cup: Althaus in second place

Althaus, who triumphed at the World Cup in Lillehammer in November, is currently in second place overall with 506 points behind the leader Kramer (710). In addition, Germany’s best ski jumper was on the podium four more times this season. At the last World Cup in Ljubno ob Savinji, Slovenia, she finished eighth. The subsequently planned competitions in Japan were cancelled.
