Also in Poperinge soon bicycle streets

During the pilot project, the focus will be on the busiest one-way streets in zone 30 in the city center. The intention is to start this fall, in September at the start of the new school year. The measure will be piloted for one year. An evaluation will then follow.

Alderman Klaas Verbeke: ‘Poperinge is the ideal city for getting around by bicycle: the distances are limited and the city center is quite compact. In addition to the bicycle lanes, we are now opting to give cyclists an even better position in traffic. In a bicycle street, the cyclist becomes more visible in traffic and not crowded out by cars that want to overtake.’

In bicycle streets, cyclists are allowed to use the full width of the carriageway on a one-way street or the right half of the road on a two-way street. Car drivers are allowed to use a bicycle street, but they are prohibited from overtaking cyclists. The maximum speed is 30 km per hour.
