Also flooding in Enkhuizen: “This happens once every 30 years”

The water level is very high throughout the province due to recent heavy rainfall. This is clearly visible in Enkhuizen, located on the IJsselmeer. Part of the harbor is flooded. “I have never seen it like this, I must say, and I have lived here for 45 years.”

There are various causes for this high water, says Erik Vastenburg of the Hollands Noorderkwartier Water Board. Due to the heavy rainfall, there is a high discharge of river water and there is a strong wind, which means that less water can be discharged from the IJsselmeer into the Wadden Sea.

“As a result, the water level in the IJsselmeer is increasing. The situation now is approximately sixty centimeters above NAP. That water level occurs once every thirty years.”
