Ski jumper Selina Freitag also missed the first German podium finish in the Olympic winter at her Saxon home World Cup in Klingenthal.
The vice world champion came seventh on the large hill in the Vogtland Arena on Friday after a failed landing in the first round. The Japanese Nozomi Maruyama secured her fourth win of the season.
Friday’s chances of podium were mostly lost due to a wobble on her long first jump to the day’s best distance of 130.5 m – without telemark there were big deductions.
“Unfortunately I didn’t land quite so cleanly, that was brutally annoying,” said Freitag, who achieved her best result of the season, in the “ARD”: “The jump was really, really good. But I was happy too early. Now I’m a little disappointed. But things are moving forward.”
In the second round, the 24-year-old didn’t make any progress with 120.0 m; with 211.3 points, she was eleven meters short of the podium. Last winter she took second place eight times in World Cup competitions.
Reisch was the second best German in eleventh place
Newcomer Maruyama (240.5 points/130.0+127.0 m) came out on top just ahead of Slovenia’s world champion Nika Prevc (239.5) and Lisa Eder (Austria/231.9) and thus extended her lead in the overall World Cup.
Agnes Reisch came in eleventh as the second best German, while seven-time world champion Katharina Schmid (13th) is still a long way from her usual top level.
Last year, the DSV jumpers had three victories and seven podium places to their name at the same point in the season. In 2023/24, however, Schmid only achieved his first German podium finish in the tenth competition of the season in mid-January.
Another women’s competition will be held in Klingenthal on Saturday (11:45 a.m.).
