FC Bayern paid dearly for the defeat in Rotterdam. Alphonso Davies was injured much worse than initially thought. The diagnosis hits the club hard.
This injury update is a real shock for FC Bayern. The record champions will have to do without Alphonso Davies for much longer than initially expected. “Bild” and Sky report this in agreement.
Davies suffered a torn muscle fiber in his left back thigh during Bayern’s 3-0 defeat in Rotterdam on Wednesday. The club initially only announced that the Canadian would therefore be out for the time being. Internally, it was assumed that there was a small torn muscle fiber and only a two-week break. According to reports, a more precise diagnosis has now shown that the injury is much worse than initially assumed. It is therefore a major muscle rupture, which also results in a significantly longer break of four to six weeks.
This hits Bayern particularly hard because in February there are several very important games for the rest of the season: after the away game in Freiburg on Saturday, these include the two impending play-off duels (first leg on February 11th/12th, Second leg on February 18/19) in the Champions League. In between there is the important top game in the Bundesliga against champions Bayer Leverkusen (February 15th). Immediately afterwards comes the difficult home game against Frankfurt (February 23rd). (Read more about this here)
Bayern will now have to play all of these games without Davies, who is actually used as a left-back and is extremely important for head coach Vincent Kompany’s offensive and high-risk system due to his speed.
He had already been asked about the severity of Davies’ injury at his press conference on Friday. “I’ll say to Phonzy: Let’s wait a little bit longer. We’ve already got the first forecast,” said Kompany, hoping that he wouldn’t have to be without his key player for too long. A few hours later, Kompany was taken away.
