Self-driving cars encounter a very special limit in everyday life.

The robotaxi company and Alphabet subsidiary Waymo commissions helpers via an online platform to close doors left open by passengers. Waymo confirmed that in a pilot program in the US city of Atlanta, couriers from the food delivery company DoorDash are being asked for help. These are “rare” cases.

Waymo is currently using converted cars from Jaguar’s electric model I-Pace, which have classic doors. Since the cars are driverless, no one is there to close doors that may have been left open by passengers. The next generation of Waymo robotaxis will again have electrically controllable sliding doors – just like the previous model based on the Chrysler Pacifica minivan. Waymo had also experimented with closing open doors on the Jaguars by jerking off.

Over the past few days, a post from a DoorDash courier has been making the rounds online, with a screenshot showing an offer to close the door of a Waymo vehicle for $11.25 (around 9.50 euros). It is not publicly known how often passengers do not close Waymo doors. However, the cars now make more than 400,000 paid rides with passengers per week in six US cities and Silicon Valley. Therefore, even with low frequency, there are likely to be some such situations.

On the NASDAQ, Alphabet shares ultimately lost 1.08 percent to $306.02 on Friday.
