BREMEN (dpa-AFX) – FC Bayern Munich has confidently parried the attack from Borussia Dortmund (BVB (Borussia Dortmund)) at the top of the Bundesliga. The league leaders won 3-0 (2-0) at crisis club Werder Bremen and restored the old six-point gap to their pursuers.
BVB had won convincingly against FSV Mainz 05 the evening before (4-0) and will challenge Bayern in the top game in two weeks on February 28th. For the time being, however, there is no further approach to the defending champions, also because striker Harry Kane scored a double or triple in front of 41,800 spectators in the Weserstadion for the seventh time this Bundesliga season. The Englishman scored with a penalty kick in the 22nd minute and with a long-range shot in the 26th minute. After the break, Leon Goretzka (70th) made everything clear.
Werder plays courageously
Although Bremen played very courageously at times, they remained winless in the twelfth game in a row at their new coach Daniel Thioune’s home game debut. The last win against Bayern in the Weserstadion was almost 20 years ago. He achieved it on October 21, 2006, when the players were still called Diego, Tim Wiese or Torsten Frings.
In order to change this, Thioune came up with a strategy that relied entirely on bite and counterattacks. He placed the fast Justin Njinmah on the right flank and the strong running Marco Grüll in the center of the attack. This worked very well in the first ten minutes and shortly after Kane’s double strike, because Felix Agu narrowly missed a cross from Puertas in the penalty area (6′) and Njinmah (29′) and Agu again (40′) also had good finishes.
But that’s not enough against these Bayern. Like clockwork, the record champions increased their dominance after the first few minutes and got the better of their opponents.
VAR intervention before Bayern penalty
It also helped them that the VAR intervened in the first really dangerous situation in the penalty area. Lennart Karl was brought down in the penalty area by Senne Lynen, but referee Bastian Dankert initially allowed play to continue. Only after quickly studying the video images did he decide on a penalty.
Kane quickly made it 2-0, Luiz Diaz missed the possible 3-0 on a counterattack in front of Werder goalkeeper Mio Backhaus (29th). The Munich team had everything under control until half time.
Manuel Neuer out injured
After the break, a new dynamic came into this game. Bayern had to replace their goalkeeper Manuel Neuer with Jonas Urbig due to calf problems. Bremen brought in another fast player with their ten million euro purchase, Samuel Mbangula.
Werder now played even more briskly than at the start of the game. Grüll hit the post with a header (47′). Romano Schmid was denied from close range by Urbig, who reacted strongly (64′).
Just when it looked like Bayern would lose control of this game, Goretzka scored with a long-range shot from the edge of the penalty area. Alphonso Davies, Luis Diaz and substitute Jamal Musiala initiated the attack from the left side.
Not much came from Werder after that. Bremen now have to get the necessary points in the relegation battle in the two basement duels against the penultimate FC St. Pauli and against the bottom of the table 1. FC Heidenheim./sti/DP/zb
