Alonso dreams of podium with Alpine

Fernando Alonso wants to continue his winning streak in the Formula 1 race in Belgium: the Alpine driver has scored points every time since his home race in Spain. That makes eight races in a row. Number nine is now due in Spa.

“I hope that we can keep up the consistency,” says Alonso, who has a fifth place from Silverstone as his best result of the season in the books. He is very satisfied with the eight top 10 results in a row, but not with the number of points: “Sometimes it could have been even better,” he says.

Alonso refers to the races in Austria, where he was unable to take part in the sprint due to a defect and then had to start from the very back. In Barcelona, too, Alonso started from the back after an engine change.

“Despite the difficulties, we scored points,” he emphasizes and hopes that he will have a clean weekend at Spa-Francorchamps. “The car is strong now. We’ve improved a lot in the last few months and I hope a top five or top six result will be possible here.”

“We want to finish the remaining nine races positively”

Alonso has only done that twice this season: fifth at Silverstone and sixth at Le Castellet. Teammate Esteban Ocon also has a fifth place (in Spielberg) and two sixth places (in Jeddah and Montreal) as records. Alpine hasn’t made it into the top 4 so far this season.

Of course, the farewell to the end of the season that was announced during the summer break is hovering over Alonso: he will switch to Aston Martin. Nevertheless, he would like to leave Alpine with a sporting success.

“I spoke to my engineers and mechanics. We want to finish the remaining nine races positively,” he says. “A podium would be a dream for us and who knows when that opportunity will arise? Hopefully this weekend will be the first.”
