All Schiphol hotel rooms occupied due to uncertainty surrounding farmers’ protest

The night before the announced farmers’ protest, it is no longer possible to get a hotel room at Schiphol. The Hilton, Sheraton and Citizen M are all fully booked. Yet hundreds of travelers who are afraid of missing their flight because of the farmers’ blockades at Schiphol have managed to get a room in one of those three hotels on and around the terminals.

The Hilton at Schiphol, which can be reached directly from the terminal via the WTC traverse, has even been overbooked. The hotel has been overwhelmed with concerned travelers who are afraid of missing their flight tomorrow. Protesting farmers want to ‘flatten’ the whole of the Netherlands tomorrow, among other things by blocking food distribution centers and the airports of Schiphol, Rotterdam and Eindhoven.

little understanding

Floortje Molenaar and her mother Veertje from Nijkerk in Gelderland booked a room at the Hilton last Friday. They want to catch their flight tomorrow at all costs to Toronto in Canada, where Floortje lives. The little understanding that Veertje had for the concerns of the farmers has become much less: “People who have nothing to do with this and are ready for a holiday are blocked and cannot catch a flight.”

A family from Belgium is also sleeping at the Hilton to make sure they catch their flight to Aruba tomorrow: “We are not going to compromise the holiday,” says the family’s husband. “I’ve heard they’d even call in the military to do that [de boerenblokkades red.] to avoid. We wanted to err on the side of caution and we have already succeeded to some extent with this one.”

Armored Track Vehicles

KLM and Schiphol call on travelers who have to catch their flight tomorrow to come to Schiphol by public transport. The Royal Netherlands Marechaussee deploys armored tracked vehicles and shovels to prevent farmers from reaching the departure halls of Schiphol.
