All apartments of Amsterdam complex temporarily uninhabitable after major fire

The residents of 95 apartments in a residential complex in Amsterdam where a large fire raged on Saturday evening cannot go home for the time being. The fire department has declared the homes uninhabitable. The water damage is extensive, so the electricity cannot yet be restored. The technical installation is seriously damaged and must be replaced, reports the fire department. In addition, the roof has been completely destroyed and the facade will have to be repaired in certain places.

It is not yet clear how long the restoration of the eight-storey complex on Joan Muyskenweg in East Amsterdam will take. In the night from Saturday to Sunday, the residents had to sleep elsewhere because the fire was not yet under control. On Sunday, people were phased and escorted into the building to collect their personal belongings.

The fire broke out around 8 p.m. Saturday. This probably happened on the sixth floor and the fire then spread through the (cavity) wall to the roof. The strong wind drove the flames there, causing the fire to quickly spread over the roof. Fighting the fire was difficult, partly because of the size of the fire. The fire was not under control until around 2:30 am. No injuries were reported, although a number of people were checked as a precaution after smoke inhalation.
