The highly anticipated entrepreneurship event at The Harbour Club in Vinkeveen, featuring rapper Ali B as a speaker, has been cancelled. The media outlet SBS Shownieuws had even purchased tickets for the event, leading to calls for refunds.

Ali B, who has been convicted of sexual assault, was originally set to speak at this entrepreneur event. However, the event’s organization, Missing Pieces, announced that he would step back from his role, resulting in the entire event being postponed.
Media Backlash
The announcement of Ali B’s participation triggered considerable controversy, given his three-year prison sentence for two counts of rape. Critics argued that it is inappropriate for someone with such a criminal background to take the stage and speak publicly.
In the official statement from Missing Pieces, they noted, “Although he holds a warm heart for Missing Pieces and wanted to support the initiative, we collectively concluded that the event can no longer focus on the entrepreneurs and the concept for which it was designed.”
Last Minute Decision
The decision was made rather last minute, as Ali B had earlier stated that the event was indeed going ahead. He commented, “Tomorrow it will be solely about entrepreneurship, other speakers, and the attending individuals. That is what matters.”
He further emphasized the importance of networking for the attendees, stating that the event wasn’t intended to be a performance or theater show.
Ticket Holders Left in Limbo
This cancellation has affected media professionals who had planned to attend. Presenters at Shownieuws discussed how reporters were suddenly left scrambling to adjust their schedules. “Thom, you have to rearrange your day, as you bought a ticket. You were among those who thought, ‘Ali is taking the stage again; I want to be there,’” said presenter Dyantha Brooks.
Reporter Thom Goderie expressed disappointment, mentioning that many journalists had purchased tickets to hear Ali’s insights.
Refund Requests
Thom is now seeking a refund for his ticket. He explained that attendees have the option to either get their money back or attend a new date—albeit without Ali’s presence, which prompted him to choose the refund option. “We bought the tickets through a contact for 59 euros. Half of the attendees may have come for Ali,” he stated.
Speculations about Ali B’s motives for wanting to participate in the event have arisen. Media analyst Evert Santegoeds suggested that financial reasons could be influential, given Ali’s extended time spent in Dubai, a place known for its high cost of living.
