Algeria has found a new national coach after parting ways with Djamel Belmadi: Vladimir Petkovic is his successor. The 60-year-old was most recently on the sidelines at Girondins Bordeaux from July 2021 to February 2022; he previously looked after the Swiss national team for seven years. With the Swiss he reached the European Championship round of 16 in 2016, the World Cup round of 16 in 2018 and the European Championship quarter-finals in 2021.

Predecessor Belmadi had to resign after a disappointing Africa Cup of Nations. In 67 games under his leadership, Algeria scored an average of 2.18 points and won the tournament title in 2019. However, the co-favorites lost 0-1 (0-1) against outsiders Mauritania in the last group game of this year’s edition and had to return home early as the last team in Group D. For Algeria it was the second preliminary round exit in a row.
