Alexander Schwolow hasn’t had a good time in the Bundesliga recently. At Heart of Midlothian in Scotland he is now experiencing the beautiful side of professional football again.

Last summer it was over for Alexander Schwolow in the Bundesliga. His contract with Union Berlin expired. He could no longer get past Frederik Rönnow, number one in the “Irons”. The 33-year-old had a total of 206 Bundesliga games under his belt at that point, but was now suddenly without a club.

“It was an unusual time. The Bundesliga teams were preparing and I had to keep myself fit individually. It was strenuous and sometimes tough,” the 33-year-old looks back.

Wins against Celtic and Rangers

Then a somewhat unusual offer came from Scotland Heart of Midlothian FCthe traditional club from the Premiershipwho had, however, already seen better times. At the end of last season they had to “Hearts” maintain their position in the relegation round in order to remain first class.

It worked and Schwolow’s miraculous journey in the far north could begin. The Wiesbaden native suddenly went from win to win with his new club, beating the big Scottish clubs Celtic Glasgow and just last week Glasgow Rangers. These two have always fought for the championship in Scotland over the past 40 years.

Not a big difference to the Bundesliga

Schwolow’s temporary stopover on this trip: first place in the Premiership, six points ahead of champions Celtic and only one defeat in 18 league games. Schwolow himself would never have dreamed of this run, although he realized early on that he had met a really good team in Edinburgh. “We have a high quality team, I have to say honestly. That’s hardly any different to the Bundesliga. And then our self-confidence has increased enormously with the many victories,” says Schwolow to the sports show.

Now the next thing is Highlight in front of the door, in the “Christmas game” on December 27th we go to city rivals Hibernian. The German goalkeeper is really looking forward to the game and the special derby atmosphere: “The first leg was amazing when we scored the winning goal in stoppage time. That was the loudest goal celebration I’ve ever heard.”

Just enjoy the time

In any case, he likes life in the Scottish capital. His wife and two daughters arrived from Berlin a few weeks ago. Everyone feels good: “It’s really cool here, Edinburgh is a beautiful city, I can only recommend it to everyone. Of course, there are challenges with artificial turf and hard wind from the side at the games here, but it’s very right for us at the moment.”

So he just wants to continue to enjoy his time with the “Hearts” and ride the wave of success for as long as possible. But now the holidays are coming up. His parents and sister came to Edinburgh to spend the special time together. Another win against Hibs would be a belated Christmas present for everyone.
